Co-ops + Vermont

Co-ops, its what Vermonters do.

Vermont has a long and treasured history of cooperative economic activity. From the "village commons" in our early development to our fast growing farm-to-table movement today, coming together to address community goals is significant part of the state's heritage and an essential element in current Vermont identity.

  • The first dairy cooperative began marketing milk in 1895. At the height of dairy co-ops, more than 50% of Vermont's milk production was through co-ops.
  • The first cooperative food store, Adamant Cooperative Store, was founded in 1935. There are currently sixteen consumer food co-ops operating in Vermont.
  • There are more than 180 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in Vermont, where participants provide advance funding to fruit and vegetable farmers, artisanal cheese makers and livestock growers in advance of growing/production season, in return for shares of the farm output throughout the summer and/or winter. CSA shareholders share the risks and rewards of the farmer's season. CSAs are so popular that many have waiting lists.
